Philadelphia Peace Plaza* is a non-profit organization in Philadelphia. I worked on this project in the summer of 2021 at the MICA Design Storefront with 2 others. When we took on this project, they were a new organization still developing their identity and focus. Because of this, our proposed logos evolved in between meetings as the organization explored their own mission and visions.

Before our first meeting, we researched about their organization and mission. We pieced together historical context, along with some references to similar organizations that also had the Statue of Peace.

We surveyed their committee members and identified key phrases:

  • Park-making and community

  • Love-centered justice and healing

  • Remembering history

  • Connecting

  • Inspire fight for justice

  • Inheriting a spirit

  • Reconciliation and coexistence

With these in mind, we started to create first solutions of logos. I wanted a logo that could be connected into a pattern as a symbol of their value in community and connection.

*While we worked on the project, their name was 'Statue of Peace Plaza'. A few months after its completion, they changed their name to 'Philadelphia Peace Plaza'. We typeset their new name on the logo.

"What we are doing is making better history... Making a park, not just setting up the statue."

In our next few rounds of logos and revision, we wanted to explore more options for color, shapes and typefaces. The clients also asked us to explore the use of butterflies as they were often used in other similar organizations. At the same time, we started looking for typefaces created by Korean designers.

"Peace 평화를 의미하는것은 간단하고 단순하다고 생각됩니다."

[The meaning of ‘peace’ can be expressed simply and concisely.]

The final logo mark the clients chose were based on the camellia, which symbolized:

  • Hope and that the wishes of the victims will come true

  • Resilience of victims (they bloom in winter, the coldest season)

  • Strength (petals do not wither or scatter as they fall)

In our final explorations, we established the final color palette, final type treatment, details and orientation of the mark.

Our final deliverables included an easy-to-use template for non-designers, letterhead, static flexible logo, animated logo and style guide.
